Plantar fasciitis is a condition affecting the strong band of tissue on the sole of the foot called the plantar fascia. This structure runs from the heel bone to the base of the toes and helps support the arch of the foot.
When the plantar fascia is overloaded, repeatedly strained, or unable to recover between stresses, it can become painful. The pain is usually felt at the heel or along the arch, especially during weight-bearing activities.
Plantar fasciitis is not a disease in the traditional sense. It is better described as a mechanical and tissue-loading problem that has become persistent.
