Crohns disease can show itself in many different ways, and not everyone has the same combination of symptoms. The most common symptom is loose stool or diarrhoea that keeps returning. This is often mixed with a feeling of urgency, as if you have to find a toilet quickly, and sometimes there is blood or mucus in the stool. Some people instead notice alternating loose and more formed stool, with an ongoing feeling that their digestion is not stable.
Alongside changes in bowel movements, abdominal pain is very frequent. The pain is often felt in the lower right side of the belly, but it can appear in other areas depending on which part of the intestine is inflamed. The pain may come in waves or cramps, especially after meals, and can sometimes ease after passing gas or stool. During stronger flares, the pain can become constant and draining, making it difficult to concentrate or sleep.
Fatigue is another major symptom and is sometimes underestimated. Even when stool and pain are not extreme, ongoing inflammation uses a lot of energy and can disturb sleep, appetite, and mood. Many people with Crohns disease say they feel tired in a way that sleep alone does not fix. This deep tiredness can lead to lower motivation, feelings of frustration, and difficulty keeping up with commitments at work or home.
Weight loss can appear when the body is not absorbing nutrients properly or when eating becomes unpleasant due to pain and nausea. Some people start to avoid food out of fear that every meal will trigger cramps or an urgent trip to the toilet. Over time this can lead to a lack of calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals, which further weakens the body and slows healing. In younger people, poor nutrition can also affect growth and development.
There are also symptoms outside the gut. Crohns disease can cause sore joints, skin rashes, mouth ulcers, and eye irritation. These are called extra intestinal manifestations and they remind us that Crohns disease is not just a local gut problem but part of a wider immune imbalance. When these symptoms appear together, they can give doctors additional clues that inflammatory bowel disease is present instead of a simple infection.
Finally, it is important to notice warning signs that need urgent medical attention. These include strong and increasing abdominal pain, vomiting that does not settle, a hard swollen belly, very high fever, or black, tar like stool. These could point to serious complications such as a blockage, perforation, or severe bleeding. While those events are not everyday occurrences, they show why new or worsening symptoms should always be taken seriously and discussed with a health professional.
