Chapter 34 · Published 11 Mar 2026 00:05

There is a widespread belief in the psoriasis and autoimmune community that nightshade vegetables worsen inflammation and should be avoided. Tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, and other foods are often placed on a list of things to eliminate.

I followed this advice for a long time. Like many people who are desperate for relief, I avoided nightshades completely. I did it strictly, because when you are suffering, you will try anything that promises improvement.

When I eventually started Cosentyx and my skin came under control, I asked my specialist directly if I needed to continue avoiding nightshades. His answer was simple and clear: no. There was no medical reason for me to avoid them.

I started eating nightshades again. Tomatoes. Aubergines. Peppers. Hot food, which I missed terribly. And nothing happened. My psoriasis did not flare. My skin did not worsen. My recovery continued.

This was an important realisation for me.

The belief that nightshades universally drive psoriasis did not hold true in my experience. Avoiding them had added stress, restriction, and fear around food, without providing real benefit.

This does not mean that no one reacts to nightshades. Some people may have individual sensitivities. But turning food into the main enemy can distract from the real drivers of severe psoriasis.

When inflammation was truly controlled at a biological level, food variety returned safely. Enjoying normal meals again improved my quality of life, not my symptoms.

Diet should support living, not create fear. Removing foods without clear personal evidence can increase stress, which in itself worsens psoriasis.

This is why I call nightshades a myth for many people: not because reactions are impossible, but because blaming these foods often oversimplifies a much deeper condition.
